You’re longing to ski Whistler Blackcomb. And why not? It’s North America’s biggest ski area, boasts enough vertical to turn the strongest thighs to jelly, has the most terrain diversity on the continent, and sits atop what may be the finest purpose-built alpine village anywhere. Oh, and it also hosts the World Ski & Snowboard Festival — the hottest/funnest/wildest snow/art/film festival on the planet.

Just one problem: When a place has ALL this going for it, they charge appropriately. Which can mean AYPS (above your pay-scale) for some.

Appealing to value-conscious visitors, world travelers Russell and Jelena Kling are building Whistler’s first budget boutique accommodation—a pod lodging located dab-smack in Whistler Village.

The new place is the Pangea Pod Hotel. “We’re not a hotel,” the Klings insist. “We’re not a hostel. We’re the best of both worlds, providing our guests the privacy and comfort of a hotel and the affordability and social vibe of a hostel.”

Instead of rooms with doors and windows, the Pangea has 88 pods. A curtain replaces an actual door and each pod is equipped with a lockup for valuables. Bathrooms are shared, and there’s a bar, restaurant, and hangout space.

What distinguishes Pangea from a youth or backpacker hostel? No bunk beds. No single beds. No tired mattresses or grotty toilets or dusty 70’s shag rugs.

One other thing it’s not? “We’re not a Tokyo-style capsule hotel. Thousands of hours of painstaking interior design work and sophisticated prototyping was invested in making sure your Pod doesn’t just help you get a great night’s sleep, but also makes you feel completely relaxed and comfortable with your surroundings.”

Oh, and that name? For travelers, it’s kinda’ inspired. Pangea was the Earth’s supercontinent about 335-million years ago. Its name is derived from pan, meaning whole, and Gaia, meaning Mother Earth.

Whistler’s Pangea should be ready for you and other Pod People in April, 2018. With luck and a decent tailwind, in time for the World Ski & Snowboard Festival.
